THE GREEN LANTERN.

The world of supplements and you miraculously becoming the optimal version of yourself has been riding the commercial wave since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I have fond memories of watching Popeye The Sailor Man down a can of spinach and instantaneously doubling his muscle mass to defeat his arch nemesis Bluto. In today’s world canned spinach has been replaced by “Super Foods” and supplements, and the explosion of new products in the last few years has been atomic!

I’m a massive fan of trusting Mother Nature over Big Pharma, however this notion that  nutritionally dense plants, herbs or a deer antler can tip the scales of balance to not only level up all your other poor lifestyle choices but turn you into a super version of yourself is frankly ridiculous. Emotional balance, quality of sleep, breathing mechanics, your environment, balanced diet, and your level of physical activity will always supersede a can of “Popeye’s spinach”. Getting these factors working for you will have a much bigger impact than jumping on the next super food trend.

That being said I am a massive fan of optimising with optimal foods, so much so I am an ambassador for a supplement brand I truly believe can make a positive impacts in our lives. This might seem a bit contradictory after my opening rant but my position on supplements will always be the same “get your house” in order first, and then fine tune with the finer things in life. Just don’t expect miracles.

Popeye really was ahead of his time as super-greens have become one of the biggest players in the supplement market. Once you dig a little deeper into the world of food economics you quickly realise why its so difficult to get a wide spectrum of nutrients in the right quantities into our diets. Modern farming practices, soil depletion, chemical fertilizers, hectic lifestyles, supercharged addictive alternatives to cooking are all contributing factors into supplements becoming popular. The super green family has grown in publicity more than most in recent years, and for good reason. These often quick growing plants offer some of the most dense vitamin and mineral profiles on the planet, and they are brimming with antioxidants and phytonutrients .

Here Are Five That Top Our List

Spirulina : Nutrient rich, enhances the body’s ability to detoxify from toxins and heavy metals, anti-inflammatory and an aide to the immune system.

Concerns: Individual reactions and digestive sensitivity can both be concerns along with quality of purity.

Chlorella: Nutrient dense, helps remove heavy metals, supports the immune system and improves digestive health.

Concerns: digestive discomfort, rare allergic reactions, interaction with some medication.

Moringa : Dense nutrient spectrum and aids liver protection. Animal studies suggest cancer suppressing properties. Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, helps in managing blood sugar and insulin levels.

Concerns: very few risks or side effects if you stay within recommended daily amount, but can interfere with some medications.

Wheatgrass : Wide nutrient spectrum, contains important enzymes, and chlorophyll. Studies suggest it may help with fighting infections and lower cholesterol, it aids digestion and improves cognitive function

Concerns: nausea, throat swelling and rashes but regarded as safe for the majority of people if consumed within normal daily doses.

Parsley : Impressive mineral and vitamin profile, increased digestion, increases nutrient absorption, kidney health, blood purifier, improves bone and joint health.

Concerns : over consumption can lead to liver or kidney complications.

Extensive scientific research into the benefits of these plants are often limited and therefore sparks conversation without the backing of facts or figures. Coupled with the fact there really is no “Popeye effect” advocates are left vulnerable to skepticism. You may feel better but you might not feel much improvement immediately and too often benefits are brushed off as placebo. However many of the benefits happen on a cellular level. How can you tell if your immune system is functioning more effectively, you have less inflammation in the body, or your cognitive health is improving? Without the scientific backing most benefits become anecdotal, and that is not a bad thing. You should be your favorite science project.

Hi I'm Tesh affectionately known as Teshie and less frequently as that little c#unt , after years of passionately obsessing about movement and health I thought I should blog a little . Apparently one can not be truly wise on a topic unless he/she has shared themselves. So this is me sharing a little.
